The panel will discuss the diagnostic process, provide an update on clinical trials, and how advances in the study of mitochondrial disease, can provide opportunities to impact other more well known chronic diseases.

Mitochondrial disease is somewhat of a misnomer. It is not just a single disease entity. Instead, it is a broad array of conditions, depending on which organs are affected. Symptoms can range from severe fatigue to seizures, hearing impairment, respiratory complications, etc. It is estimated that 1 in 4,000 people in the United States are impacted by this rare disease. Over the past few years, there have been promising developments and increasing interest in this research space, leading to improved understanding of the potential links with more commonly known diseases, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, etc.
