Bio
Steve has a career that is both commercial and academic. Outside of Wharton, Steve is a venture partner and consultant to numerous health care and life science venture capital funds. During his 22 years as a Wharton lecturer, he has created or taught twelve courses that he has taught to nearly 9000 students. Steve is visiting faculty in the ISB Health Care Management Program. He created and teaches in the Strathmore Business School Health Care Management MBA Program in Nairobi. Steve’s research on biotechnology capacity in the emerging markets has been widely published. He recently co-authored a study on India biotechnology that made numerous recommendations for accelerating growth. During his private sector career, Steve has been involved in the creation or funding of over 40 biotechnology and information technology companies globally. He sits on boards of numerous public, private, NGO, and philanthropic organizations. Steve is the founder of the International Institute for Biotechnology Entrepreneurship and Leadership, an organization that offers intensive training for managers and scientists in the formation and launch of life-science companies. His research and publications focus on human resource capacity building for the life-science and health services industries in low to middle income countries. Steve previously held the positions of Partner and Managing Director, Access Partners, Vice President of Development of Teleflex Incorporated and Vice President, S.R.One, Ltd., GlaxoSmithKline’s venture fund. During his career he was Managing Director of the Center for Technology Transfer at the University of Pennsylvania, and held a similar position at Thomas Jefferson University. At the start of his career, Mr. Sammut co-founded and served as CEO of the Delaware Valley Organ Transplant Program.
