Bio
Kathleen is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Nurse Practitioner in the section of Palliative Medicine, and a Scholar at the Dartmouth Collaboratory for Implementation Sciences at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Her current studies include: opioid risk assessment in oncology; cannabis use in palliative medicine; implementation of opioid management guidelines in palliative care clinic; and interprofessional education in palliative and hospice. Kathleen provides clinical care with a focus on complex pain management and substance use disorder in patients with serious illness. She is piloting a medications for opioid use disorder clinic in palliative care for those with serious illness and co-morbid opioid use disorder. Her experience includes acute and chronic pain management; and acute, ambulatory and home-based palliative care. She has developed interdisciplinary palliative resource champion programs, an inpatient pain management consultation service and a pain resource nurse champion program. Kathleen presents locally, nationally and internationally on pain management, safe opioid prescribing and palliative care. She has been active in national hospice and pain management organizations in various capacities. She has authored articles and book chapters in the areas of pain management, safe opioid prescribing and palliative care. Kathleen is currently on the editorial advisory board and the coordinator of the Ethics series for the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing and on the editorial advisory board for The Nurse Practitioner Journal. She received her Bachelors in Economics from the University of Maryland, her Bachelor of Nursing from University of Hawaii, a Masters in Nursing from University of Washington, and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from New York University. She completed a palliative care fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York.
